We are living it up in what they call "North Country" here in Lake Placid, New York. It's the tiniest place we've ever visited for vacation, but this place may be the most fun.
Every year for our anniversary, January 20, we try to take a ski trip. Paoli, Holiday Valley and this year we're doing it up big. After all, it is the last anniversary of dating life. Tuesday we headed up north to Mentor, spent the night, then continued the rest of our twelve our trip to the corner of New York, about an hour from Vermont and an hour south of Montreal.
The main idea behind the vacation was skiing on Whiteface Mountain, but we've gotten so much more.
We spent three days on the mountain. It's the largest in the Eastern U.S. and the largest we've ever attempted and boy did it kick our butts.
Don't get me wrong, we had a great time climbing up to the top at 4,386 feet and flying all the way down, but three full days of that will really wear you out. It's also a very difficult mountain. Not only is it pretty icy, but it's the same place they competed for the 1932 and 1980 Olympics, so it's all about speed. There are no casual runs. Even the easiest runs go fast.
We did pretty good. The first day Greg read the map wrong and we took a lift that only led to black diamond hills. We ended up sliding down on our butts to get to a run we could actually handle. Day two, we took time to warm up and thought we could try a more difficult run on the side of the mountain. It was definitely beyond more difficult, but once you're up there, you have to come back down, so we did. Our skiing skills were definitely tested.
Each night after we rested from the mountain we took part in all the city has to offer. Thursday we had a wonderful anniversary dinner at the Mirror Lake Inn.
Friday we took a horse drawn sleigh ride through the quiet,
untouched golf course,
then headed to the local brewery where Greg wanted to buy the whole place! After, we checked out Mirror Lake and the toboggan shoot,
which we both enjoyed on Saturday. We also did some
ice skating and
a little shopping before we called it a trip.
I think the best part for us is just enjoying winter. Too often we get caught up in the pitfalls of our jobs working in local news. Snow and cold means work. Here it means fun and we soaked up as much as we could in the beautiful Adirondacks.
