An International Affair

Yesterday, I covered perhaps the most interesting and disturbing story in my short career. It has international interest.

This woman, known in court as Azra Basic, though she has three other names, is accused of torturing and killing Serbians at the start of the Bosnian war in 1992. She was charged in 1993 and was located here in Kentucky, in rural Powell County, where she's been working and living like any other person.

Due to international laws it's taken until now to arrest her. For the first the US District Court in Eastern Kentucky is dealing with an international extradition. I was in court yesterday for her first hearing. Everyone the judge, defense and prosecution has to figure out what the laws are and how the process works.

What she's accused of is nearly unspeakable. Here's my story.
