Today one custody allegedly shot and killed another at a middle school in Lexington. School was out. No children were in danger, but the whole city nearly shut down because the gunmen is still on the run.
Because it happened in a school it was a bigger story that necessary and everyone who works in news is running in circles trying to get as much information as quickly as possible. Typically this comes from police, coworkers, neighbors, friends. Today some of it came from Facebook.
The local paper wrote a story based on what the suspected killer wrote on his Facebook page. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Of course I've done it too. Never wrote a story from it, but when something happens, especially when it happens to a teenager, the first place people go is Facebook or MySpace to look for a picture. There's always a liability, but if it means you get a picture of someone before a competition, that always falls by the wayside.
People always warn kids in college, be careful what you put on the internet because it never goes away. Wonder how they feel if what you post on Facebook is what people remember about you if you pass away or get yourself in a compromising situation?
