Go Big or Go Home

It's become an unintentional theme in the Weiss/Schapker household. All or nothing. That is the case again this week. Greg's currently on the east coast chasing Hurricane Irene, while at the same time, we're signing off to buy a house.

We've been looking for more than a month now. We weren't really sure exactly what we wanted, but a basement, a nice sized yard and a good sized kitchen were the top priorities. We've seen quite a few duds in the last few weeks. Right when I was thinking something in our search wasn't right, there she was. List about 25 thousand dollars above our budget, we decided to check it out anyway, in case we could get a deal, and we did.

It's four bedrooms and 2 and a half baths. It has a thousand square foot unfinished basement and a nice long backyard that's almost .4 acres. It's on a quiet culd-e-sac with only four other houses in a very sought after neighborhood. We got it all right on budget.

It was built in 1977 and the owners lived their the entire life of the house. Not sure where they are now, but it appears their daughters, who live out of town, were the ones in charge of selling. From what my realtor tells me, they wanted about 15 thousand dollars above what we could pay, but their realtor talked them out of it. She told them you have to take this or your house will never sell. It left my realtor speechless.

In the end we got the home for about 85 dollars a square foot, a good 30 to 40 dollars lower than what most houses in that area sell for.

That was the easy part. By the time they agreed to let us have it, Greg was half way to Virginia. For the second year in a row, his company let him head out to help their sister stations cover an impending hurricane. That meant borrowing his hotel's fax machine to get him to sign the documents.

Now, it's time for an inspection. I hope to get that done this week, get with the bank and as long as everything goes as planned, we should have the house before the wedding. How settled in we'll get before that day exactly six weeks from now, we'll see, but in my life, nothing's simple. But that's what makes me even more excited to get married and officially start our lives in our new home.
